Age 69, passed away peaceully at William Riley Hospice in Munster, Indiana, after a courageous battle with colon cancer.

Charles was born on December 30, 1940, in Meridian, Mississippi, the first child born to Charles and Emma Heffner. Charles graduated from Gary Roosevelt High School, Class of 1959. He served in the United States Air Force and the United States Army where he retired. He also worked for the Gary Public Schools.

He leaves to mourn his passing four sons, Charles III, (Coleitha) of Wetumpka, ALabama; Simon of Sydney, Australia; Christopher and Keane (fiance Syblil), all of Gary; one daughter, Ja'Vannah of Gary, an honorable son, Justin; three grandchildren, Ami, Dorian, and Synia; an honorable grandson, Thomas; two brothers Errol and Bowen both of Gary; two sisters, Daphne Alexander (Bernard) of Ypsilanti, Michigan and Lena Willis of Brighton, Michigan; one sister-in-law, Eva of Merrillville, Indiana, and a host of relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his former wife, Junetta Heffner; his parents, Charles and Emma Heffner, and one brother, Ernie.

The family will receive friends at the Guy and Allen Funeral Directors, 2959 West 11th Avenue, Gary, Indiana, from 12 to 8 p. m. with family hour from 6 to 8 p. m. on Thursday July 8, 2010. The service will be held on Friday, July 9, 2010, at Christ United Methodist Church, 201 West Ridge Road, Gary, Indiana, at 11:00 a. m., with Pastor Katurah W. Johnson officiating. Burial Will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park, Hobart, Indiana.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to William Riley Hospice, Munster, Indiana. The family of the late Charles Heffner, Jr. would like to thank the staff of William Riley Hospice for their kind, caring, and compassionate care.
