Mr. Paul Julius Yates, 57, of 247 Upper Crab Orchard Road, Banner Elk, died Tuesday night, October 15, at Watauga Medical Center.

He was born Nov. 22, 1938, in the Valle Crucis community of Watauga County to Addie Mast Yates and the late Julius Leonard Yates. He served in the U. S. Air Force from 1959 until 1963 and was a retired land surveyor from Lacey Surveying in Newland. He was a member of Holy Cross Episcopal Church in Valle Crucis.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Ruth Keys Yates; one daughter, Mrs. Jennifer Edmisten and her husband, Bruce, of Banner Elk; one son, Paul Ethan Yates, of the home; one grandaughter, Kathryn Elizabeth Edmisten of Banner Elk; his mother, Mrs. Addie Yates of Valle Crucis and two brothers, Hugh Dean Yates of Huntsville, AL and Bill Yates of Charlotte.

Services were Friday morning at Holy Cross Episcopal Church, officiated by Father Scott Oxford and the Rev. Deacon Cris Greer. Burial followed in the Liberty-Matney Community Cemetery.

Hampton Funeral Service was in charge of the arrangements.
